The Speed of Life
How fast is your life? I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that life and everything seem to be going by way too fast. As if life isn’t stressful enough then we add on the additional stressor of wanting and/or getting things done fast, faster, or fastest. And I feel like ever since the pandemic, everything has been moving faster than ever.
Fastest internet? Fastest car? Fastest restaurant delivery? That is all available to us. In fact, in some instances, that is what we demand and/or want and need. Plus, we have turned multi-tasking into a “Superpower”!
The problem is, however, that we are now ‘addicted’ to fast…we want things faster and faster and want to get things done quicker and quicker. Unfortunately, this then adds additional stress to our lives and an added stressor to our bodies. Because we are always so busy and want things faster, we are what I call “constantly on”! (Like a light switch).
When we are constantly on, our body doesn’t have the opportunity to slow down and rest like it needs. Even when we are slowing down, we still have a lot of thoughts roaming the halls of our brains making it difficult to sleep or even to just relax.
Where does this vicious cycle end? It ends with you! With you making a conscious choice to do something about it. Because if you don’t make that choice, your body will! Your body will get to the point of saying ENOUGH! You will then be down for the count, whether through an injury or a sickness. Your body is going to force you to slow down, one way or another. Wouldn’t it be better if you made that decision instead of your body?
So what is a person to do? In a world that is focused on fast and quick, slowing down can be difficult. So here are some suggestions:
- Getting a massage–you knew I was going to throw that in there, didn’t you? The benefits are endless!
- Taking a break from all social media, phone, internet, etc.! I know this sounds like a death sentence, doesn’t it? But believe it or not, everything works better if you unplug it for a while, including you.
- Reading a book just for fun! When was the last time you did that?
- Meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises–all of these things can help you slow down.
- Any activity that you find enjoyable, keeps you in the present moment, not focusing on past projects or future ones either.
MY CHALLENGE TO YOU: Take some time to SLOW DOWN your life, where you are not multi-tasking every moment or trying to get everything done right now. Everything doesn’t have to be the fastest or quickest.
I don’t think life was meant to be that way. Oh, and if you haven’t scheduled that massage, click here to schedule that appointment online or call me at (317)372-1988. Your body will thank you for it!
